7 Quick Takes

for the weekend of March 30th

The three, or four, of you who have been here before will notice there is some remodeling going on here at thetroglodyte.com. It's been a couple years and the place needed a new coat of paint. Like all projects I do at home, you can expect it will take a month of Sundays to complete.

I took Troglotyke #4 (12 yo son) to see The Hunger Games last night after baseball practice. A rare time for just the two of us. We both had heard from so many people that they cut a lot out and changed things from the book that our expectations were pretty low. Like what they did to The Firm low, which for a standalone movie wouldn't have been that horrid. The movie runs 2:15, so I don't know how much more people were thinking needed to be in there, and the changes they made were all pretty reasonable in staying true to the book. In the end, we were pleasantly surprised, and a good time was had by all.

Speaking of baseball... I always have the feeling (and heard something similar from other lovers of the game) that with a new baseball season, all things are new. As we enter Holy Week, imagine how many of orders of magnitude greater it must feel in the New Jerusalem thanks to Jesus Christ's suffering, death, and resurrection.

I always thought I'd be OK (just OK) with Mitt Romney being the Republican nominee. As his endorsements start racking up, my stomach starts getting uneasy. I'm not referring to Marco Rubio and Paul Ryan, who I think are playing the chit collection game. No it's this litany: Bill Weld, Donald Trump, Bob Dole, John McCain, and, now, George H.W. Bush. They are all fine men  in their own right and in certain ways, but together they show a streak of conservative squishiness that I don't think fit the times. (Santorum and Gingrich have had their own squishy moments, but I have always taken them as things they thought they needed to do to advance toward a greater goal, rather than they thought the squishy was the right thing to do.) Anyway, I'm not saying I won't support him if nominated because, as a precinct delegate, I'm committed to supporting the party's endorsed candidates; just getting increasingly uneasy as the convention draws nearer.

On Friday, March 30th, many dioceses and parishes held a day of prayer and fasting for religious liberty in light of the HHS mandate. One of the cool things about the Church existing throughout space and time is that we can participate anytime. So, if you missed it, go ahead, and offer it up.

I've now read several reviews of reviews (an interesting phenomenon that wouldn't have exploded without the rise of the blogosphere) of The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion by Jonathan Haidt. I think I'm going to have to read it.

On Thursday, I was feeling a little strung out (2 jobs, prep work to coach baseball, starting this blog thing (again) in earnest, all the usual things the Troglotykes have going...), when I get one of those e-mails that make the rounds. It was just a YouTube link, so I didn't know what it was. It turned out to be clips of this guy. Yeah, I've seen it multiple times. Yeah, yeah, yeah, sure it's inspirational... It's 7 minutes, and I was gonna pass on it, but it turned out I had 7 minutes before I had to run off to my next meeting. So I watched it (again). And doggone it if I didn't feel a little jazzed afterwards. Thanks alot, Mom (aka the Troglomatrix).
